MCC – how Sri Lanka will become a battleground between China and the USA
The ongoing economic war between China and the US that was started ever since Donald Trump became the President of the United States is nothing else but a reenactment of the Cold War, an ideological conflict that benefits no one except the countries that started it. Both China’s “Belt and Road” initiative and the U.S.’s MCC agreement are in fact tools that these countries are using for the sole purpose of aligning nations that have so far stood away from their economic conflict. The whole thing is in fact very similar to what the USSR and the U.S. did during the Cold War with the creation of the “Molotov Plan” and the “Marshall Plan”. Promise money to emerging nations, then control their social and economic policies via mechanisms that in theory verify the standards of eligibility, but, in reality, infringe on the sovereignty of the recipient nation. Did Ranil and the UNP know about this, or did they simply not care to ask any question whatsoever?
If Sri Lanka is to come on top of this whole geopolitical mess, it must maintain its non-aligned status or else it risks on becoming a battleground for Chinese and American interests. The moment we as a country accept a foreign deal either with China or the U.S. is the moment when we will lose our most important asset that we have – the ability to deal with everybody on equal terms. Losing some money might be a bad thing, but losing our sovereignty is unacceptable. Sri Lanka is the land of the Sri Lankans, and forever will be so. This is the thing that both Ranil and Sajith will never understand.
